Trejo’s Cantina, Lune de Miel + Chapman Turns 1

Mexican Restaurant Pasadena

Frontman Danny Trejo and his partners open an outpost next to The Pasadena Playhouse.

Danny Trejo is fast on his way to becoming better known more for tacos (and donuts) than for his movie roles.

If you head over to his newest Trejo’s Cantina in Pasadena’s Playhouse District, literally next to the Playhouse that gives the neighborhood its name, you will find not only high-end street tacos, quesadillas, burritos and house-made churros, you will also find a nice little list of independent beer to pair with all four foods.

On the Saturday that I visited I had a hard choice to make with three beers on the list from Los Angeles, one from San Clemente and one from Ventura. The choices were varied:

• Hopular Mechanics IPA from Beachwood
• Beach Day Wheat from El Segundo
• Unicorn Juice Wheat from Artifex
• Saber Tooth Squirrel from Smog City
• Pale Ale from Madewest

On a bright day, a glass partition divided the room into a bar that’s bright with windows facing the street, or the Playhouse courtyard. The building is a Historical Landmark constructed all the way back in 1917 so there is a distinct melding of the old and the new in food, beer and architecture.

We turn to Canada for the BEER OF THE WEEK. Unibroue has a new summer seasonal and it is stellar. Lune de Miel (aka Honeymoon) is a strong amber brewed with local Québec honey. It has a wonderful potpourri and hefeweizen aroma. The taste is sparkly with a bite to it and it carries a kick that seems bigger than the 8% ABV. The honey notes linger on the finish to balance the Belgian spice flavors.

Your HOMEWORK is to take a drive to the 1st Anniversary Old Towne Block Party being thrown by Chapman Crafted on Saturday, August 12. They’ve planned a lot for the day: Ping Pong, corn hole, washer and other games for the old folks and board games, coloring books, balloons and cookies for the kids. Food trucks will be parked and ready. No, I have not forgotten Brian Thorson’s beers. Stations will be placed around the brewery dispensing their beers plus there will be a first ever can release too!
