Spicy Lao Sausage [CLOSED]

Sausage Orange County

The grilled Spicy Lao sausage plate lives up to the name and delivers great snap.

Garden Grove in Orange County contains a sizable stretch of Little Saigon, which houses one of the strongest Vietnamese strongholds outside Vietnam. North of the 22 freeway, you’ll also find a distinct Korean District. The city also boasts other Southeast Asian standouts along Garden Grove Boulevard. Spicy Lao features the rarely seen cuisine of Vietnam’s western neighbor Laos in the back of a lowkey strip mall. The high-energy space features decorative fans and bicycles on the walls, a fish tank, and elephant statuettes. They played Pandora’s Stevie B station on repeat. In terms of food, Spicy Lao offers diners a focused 10-item menu.

I tried three Spicy Lao dishes, none better than Lao Sausage ($9.95), also known as sai kok. House-made pork sausage comes “bursting with flavors” like lemongrass, Makrut lime leaves, and chile peppers. Links are grilled to order until the snappy skin becomes crispy. The sausage is sliced and served on crunchy raw cabbage with a side of mildly spicy tomato paste. I’d be happy to enjoy this plate again and again, just like “Because I Love You (The Postman Song).”

Dose of Vitamin P spotlights my favorite pork dish from the previous week.
