Coffee Tokyo

Sidewalk Stand is a Tokyo coffee, craft beer, and sandwich bar that my friend Tomo recommended for bitter orange coffee beverages. They have a downstairs bar along the Nakameguro canal with a sandwich case, cookie jars, and two-group La Marzocco espresso machine. Most people congregate upstairs at high-top, plant-lined communal tables.

Bitter Orange Americano (480 yen) featured a fresh-pulled shot of espresso made with beans from Allpress, a New Zealand roaster from Michael Allpress that dates to 1986 and roasts locally in Tokyo. The iced drink also contains Sidewalk Stand’s signature bitter orange syrup, which includes slices of bitter orange soaked with sugar syrup, plus the aromatic infused syrup. Flavored syrups can lean sweet, but the bitter orange and coffee helped find balance.
