It’s only been a few months, but downtown denizens already understand that the shared Fashion District space from Verve Coffee Roasters and Juice Served Here delivers a waterfall of delicious beverages. This fun fact may not make the marquee, but Short Cake pastry chef Ivan Marquez prepares Savory pastries for the case, including Focaccia Uva & Lardo, Polenta & Sage Madeline, and my top pick, Bacon & Mustard Monkey Bread ($4.50).
Marquez fills an aluminum tin with crisp, interconnected squiggles of croissant dough folded with whole grain mustard, savory lardons and of course plenty of butter. This Short Cake monkey bread is a major departure from the sweet, cinnamon bombed bread domes that became popular in the ’50s, and I’m totally cool with that, especially since cappuccinos are readily available.
Dose of Vitamin P spotlights my favorite pork dish from the previous week.
