Salem Valley Farms: Satisfying Summertime Ice Cream Stand

Ice Cream Connecticut

Salem Valley Farms is a seasonal ice cream destination that uses Connecticut milk.

Farm-fresh ice cream is a New England tradition. Back roads host stands like Salem Valley Farms that are only open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We ordered from teenagers at the barn window and found seats at a picnic table on a grassy Connecticut hill. Across the road, a low-lying fog filled a field to dramatic effect.

My medium cup ($3.60) was treated to scoops of Purple Sable (black raspberry chip) and Peach. Both flavors clearly incorporated fresh fruit, but the latter was especially good, with big, sweet peach chunks.

This banana split ($5.99) was piled with toasted almond ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, cherries, rainbow sprinkles…and no bananas.

It was the second time of the day that Allison ordered a banana dish, and it didn’t come with bananas. We ate breakfast at Smokash restaurant, and her banana-stuffed French toast was missing bananas. Coincidentally, Smokash’s owners were eating ice cream at Salem Valley Farms during our visit.

It was a warm day and the ice cream and cool night air helped to provide sweet relief.
