Considering L.A. is located along the Pacific Ocean, it took longer than expected for the latest fish sandwich era to arrive. Thankfully, thoughtful chefs have combined our proximity to high-quality products with international influences and culinary flair to produce some great Los Angeles fish sandwiches. Fried, grilled, and blackened fish now stars between memorable breads. Cured and smoked fish is more popular than ever on bagels thanks to businesses like Gjusta and Wexler’s Deli, which make both. Cajun style “blackened” fish sandwiches have also had a revival, which no doubt would have delighted late Louisiana legend Paul Prudhomme. Tuna salad sandwiches have even become popular again. Sadly, two top tuna melts, Lost At Sea and Connie & Ted’s, are no longer available. Plenty of other fantastic fish sandwiches have fallen by the wayside as well, including Arroz y Fun’s bolo fish and Yess Aquatic’s fish katsu sandwich. Are fish sandwiches a hard sell? Not to me. Learn about my favorite Los Angeles fish sandwiches from the current crop.
