Lily’s Breakfast Burrito (Food of the Week)

Breakfast Burrito Los Angeles

Malibu is known for many things: multi-million dollar estates, obstructed beach access, prime Pacific Ocean views, and Pepperdine University. One key element is sorely lacking: affordable, high quality food. Or so I thought. Lily’s has been hidden in plain sight in back of Point Dume Village shopping plaza since 1988. Lily Castro’s small restaurant contains pink walls lined with surfing photos and both communal and patio seating. Mexican comfort food.

Lily’s was mobbed by 8 am. on a Saturday. Clearly, locals are already well aware of Lily’s, which sells tacos, tostadas and plates at lunch, and mostly egg dishes at breakfast. I enjoyed my wife’s chorizo scramble, but left more enamored with Lily’s Breakfast Burrito ($7.50). A toasty griddled flour tortilla cradled crispy bacon, soft scrambled egg, molten cheese, and earthy refried pinto beans. Douse liberally with spicy house-made salsa verde crafted with habanero, jalapeño and onion since Malibu doesn’t need to be mild.
