Every week involves a steady stream of food, drinks and people. Of course not every taste or conversation is post-able, but the range of experiences is usually pretty amazing. Lucky me. Discover highlights from July 23 – 29, 2012, some of which will help to fuel full posts.
July 25, 2012 – La Caridad relocated from Historic Filipinotown to Echo Park and brought Cuban sandwiches like the medianoche, plus specials like oxtails and chicken fricassee.
July 25, 2012 – A band of dignitaries and chef Miguel Angel Guerrero drove from Tijuana to preview the second Baja Culinary Fest at Rivera, bringing scintillating seafood tostadas.
July 26, 2012 – An Evening on the Beach benefited St. Vincent’s Meals on Wheels and attracted charitable chefs like Paul Shoemaker, chef-owner of Savory in Malibu. He previewed Juicy Lucy, which will feature hamburgers at Fig and 7th this fall, including the burger I tried with kimchi and umeboshi aioli.
July 27, 2012 – Chapa Grill has two locations, including one near LACMA. One of their specialties is the Jerusalem Mix, a stir-fry of beef, lamb, chicken and onions. It comes with two sides, and I opted for hummus and babaghanoush.
July 27, 2012 – I witnessed Royal/T Cafe’s final night in Culver City, which included world class people watching and Cordero Negro tapas courtesy of chef Sandra Cordero.
July 28, 2012 – For my first Saturday dinner, I enjoyed dishes like lion’s head meatballs with salted duck egg yolk cores at Giang Nan. As it turns out, the restaurant’s closing was imminent, though the same owners apparently have/will have another restaurant in Hacienda Heights called Shanghailander, and they were passing out flyers.
July 28, 2012 – Eagle Rock Brewery co-owner Ting Su wrangled Golden Road Brewing and El Segundo Brewing Co. to join the beer garden at KCRW’s Chinatown Summer Nights.
July 28, 2012 – My second Saturday dinner was at The Parish, a new downtown gastropub with Casey Lane in charge of culinary proceedings. Their Beets Mache Herbs salad came with molasses yogurt and an “ancient grain” granola of farro and Marcona almonds.
July 29, 2012 – Brew Something LA reconvened at Umamicatessen and local beer pros enjoyed a panel about beer distribution relationships with Firestone Walker VP Sales/Marketing Steve Almarez, bar owner Ryan Sweeney, Ace and Mission Craft Sales Manager Jace Milstead, and Stone Los Angeles Sales Supervisor Sean Beaucar.
