The food court inside Torrance’s Mitsuwa Marketplace continues to provide reasons to return, whether that’s new vendors or their annual Japanese Gourmet Food Fair that celebrates regional dishes. Sutadonya is a new stall that specializes in Japanese rice bowls and small plates. The company has been in business since 1971 and has more than two-dozen locations across Japan, plus a second stateside branch inside the Mitsuwa store in Chicago’s suburbs.
Sutadon ($7.99) is the signature garlic pork bowl at Sutadonya, featuring thin-sliced pork strips, onions, and secret garlic-shoyu sauce served over steamed white rice. The rice absorbs the sticky, savory sauce. Each bowl comes with a choice of fried egg or poached egg. I opted for fried, which was firm and oddly shaped, but that’s forgivable when pork is the point.
Dose of Vitamin P spotlights my favorite pork dish from the previous week.
