Diner South Carolina

Summerton Diner is a Carolina classic for Southern comfort food.

We stopped at Summerton Diner (SC) on our way up Route 95. Found out about it in Roadfood–they were on target with this one. It’s a basic meat and three with classic small town diner atmosphere–everyone seemed to know each other; our waitress has worked there over twenty years; and since this was a Sunday lots of locals were out for mid afternoon dinner. They had several specials and a wide selection of sides–since Roadfood touted the fried chicken, we all ordered it. We started with some wonderful warm biscuits (added to later with cornbread hot from the oven). Our waitress came back to apologize that they were cooking a new batch of fried chicken and we would have to wait–that turned out to be our lucky break because when it came (we were already gorged on biscuits) it was crispy, crunchy, peppery and golden brown. The insides were moist and succulent–one of the top ten all time fried chickens. The sides were uniformly good–I had squash casserole, mac and chesse (cheesy and gooey, but not too gooey), and pole beans.

We finished off with house made coconut cream pie, and chocolate pie–both terrific. The whole bill for four was under $40. Definitely a stop worth making.
