Curtis Nysmith hopes to turn Capitol City into a destination Hollywood sports bar.

D.C. native Curtis Nysmith has completed his transformation of the Goa space and debuts a deluxe sports bar called Capitol City on September 19. He hosted a preview last Tuesday and his contemporary design was buzzing with fashionable Hollywood denizens.

Nysmith enlisted Tag Front (BOA, Blue Velvet, Takami) to fashion the sprawling multi-room space after the kind of place you’d find along the D.C. waterfront, with plenty of brick, stone and glass and a mezzanine overlooking the main floor. Nysmith installed 46 TVs, with nothing on the main floor below 60 inches, plus a 14×8 foot high def “monster” and 4-5 different audio zones. It’s the Cahuenga Corridor, so don’t be surprised to find a separate VIP area. Capitol City also has back and front decks and roll-up windows to allow open-air. “If you took all the TVs out it still stands alone as a beautiful restaurant,” he said.

Executive Chef Shad Davis has crafted an expansive menu that hits on plenty of popular L.A. dishes, including thin crust pizzas ($10-12), and panko-crusted calamari with chili aioli ($10).

Sushi Los Angeles

Spicy tuna on crispy rice ($8) with dime-sized slivers of jalapeño is a popular early plate.

Sushi Los Angeles

Sushi proved to play a surprisingly large role on Capitol City’s menu.

Customers will also find soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers, plus Sicilian Meatball Sliders ($9) with marinara sauce, basil, arugula and Parmesan cheese on Hawaiian bread; Mac n’ Cheese ($10) with house-smoked bacon, mushrooms, scallions and a three-cheese-sauce; and entrees like the Grilled Pork Chop ($19) with cheese polenta cakes, cole slaw and Jim Beam apple chutney.

Beer Los Angeles

Capitol City carries 30 beers on tap, all served in frosted glasses.

The sports bar’s beer selection includes domestics, imports, and micro brews like Allagash White, Lost Coast Downtown Apricot Wheat and Stone Smoked Porter. Customers will find a similar number of bottles.
