#LABW6: Still More to Do

Ice Cream Sandwich Los Angeles

L.A. Beer Week inspired McConnell's ice cream sandwiches made with craft beer at Wurstkuche.

There are only 4 days left of the 2014 celebration of all things craft beer in Los Angeles. Since this is a little over the halfway point of L.A. Beer Week (LABW6), it is time to strategically plan how to maximize the remaining time, day by day.

Thursday, September 25

Every beer week has that night where there are too many events going on. Look at the LABW6 calendar and wish you could clone yourself. Tonight is that night. The epic Meeting of the Guilds at Mohawk Bend is the 900-pound gorilla of the evening, but you would also not go wrong heading to Crafting and Drafting at Plan Check Fairfax with Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits. Order six Brady Weise cocktails, which all include Ballast Point beer and spirits, or simply drink eight different Ballast Point beers, including grapefruit Sculpin and Victory at Sea aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels.

Friday, September 26

Check out one of the three Congregation chapters for their Green Flash Week which features their collaborative beer, Hoppy Kellerweiss. This ale will be released specially during LA Craft Beer Week.

Saturday, September 27

Stone Brewing Co. in Pasadena will be hosting Small Batch Saturday with beers ranging from Passion Project, “The Tiger Cub” Saison aged in White Wine Barrels, and Arbalest (Belgian Pale Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels).

Sunday, September 28

The Glendale Tap will host two Torrance neighbors with Smog City Brewing and Monkish Brewing tapping casks and special kegs. Hem and Haw the new “wild” beer from Monkish will be there as will the Smog City collaboration California Love that was brewed with 21st Amendment Brewing of San Francisco.

The Beer of the Week is a collaboration between Beachwood BBQ & Brewing and Drake’s Brewing. Vulcanizer is a dank and hoppy beer with notes of tangelo according to the brewers. How did that set of flavors come about? Heirloom spelt plus new hop varieties like Jarrylo and Neomexicanus. Plus the combined IPA knowledge of two of the best bitter breweries on the West Coast.

Your Homework is to expand your beer and dessert mindset. Beer ice cream is great. So are beer floats. But what about a beer ice cream sandwich>? Head to Wurstkuche during L.A. Beer Week or the weekend after for and McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream take on the iconic childhood treat. You can get a smokey Rauchbier ice cream between chocolate macadamia nut cookies courtesy of the famed Aecht Schlenkerla smoke beer or an Aventinus Weizenbock ice cream with toffee pecan cookies.
