Restaurant Sign Mount Pleasant

Jack's Cosmic Dogs beckons drivers along Highway 17 with a space-age sign.

Charleston area real estate agent Jack Hurley opened Jack’s Cosmic Dogs in 2000 on a busy stretch of Highway 17 about eight miles past The Wreck of the Richard & Charlene in Mount Pleasant. They specialize in hot dogs and “intergalactic” kitsch. A line snaked out the door, a testament to Jack’s Cosmic Dogs warranted popularity. The dogs were solid, and the space is fun, with plenty of bright colors and spaceship imagery.

Restaurant Mount Pleasant

The yellow building’s porch featured a vintage car and airplane. Small kids can hop in the car, but don’t even think about fitting in the plane.

Hot Dog Mount Pleasant

It was imperative to order the house-special Cosmic Dog with tangy blue cheese slaw and earthy house-made sweet potato mustard on a soft bun with a pickle spear.

Hot Dog Mount Pleasant

The Astro Dog was doused with “Zippy onion relish” and spicy mustard. If you like spice, this is a good choice.

Root Beer Mount Pleasant

Draft root beer (and regular beer) sure pair well with hot dogs.

The dogs themselves were nothing special and could have used a char, but the original toppings and atmosphere made Jack’s Cosmic Dogs worthwhile.
