Cho Man Won is the latest restaurant from from the people who own adjacent O Dae San Korean BBQ in Koreatown. This Chinese-influenced Korean spinoff is a dumpling and noodle house that promises 10K+ plus on the sign out front. What they’re measuring wasn’t exactly clear, but if they’re referring to portion size, they most definitely hit the mark. Servings are massive at this Los Angeles restaurant, especially given the low prices. Hell, they charge $3.99 for 10 dumplings (mysteriously down from $7.99) that somehow still delivered steamed satisfaction.
Glazed Chicken ($7.99) impressed me most at Cho Man Won. Hell, it was basically a Korean take on General Tso’s chicken. Not that I’m complaining. I craved that dish on a weekly basis during my suburban New Jersey upbringing. Chefs craft that iconic dish, immortalized in the documentary “The Search for General Tso,” by coating crispy dark meat chunks with corn starch. The famed General’s sauce typically incorporates soy sauce, sugar, garlic and ginger. At Cho Man Won, I experienced a similar, but distinctive chicken dish. They featured a sticky sweet sauce balanced by a lingering chile kick. The finishing touch was a dusting of crunchy crushed peanuts, which added to the chicken’s winning texture.
