Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood is on the rise, and Highland Bakery owner Stacey Eames has been a big part of the process, packing her bakery cafe while opening two additional branches. The low-slung brick building with art-lined walls sells a lot of pancakes, Benedicts and biscuits, but my choice was the Breakfast Sandwich ($5.29) since it’s available on a variety of house-made breads.
It cost an extra $1.59 to get the Highland Bakery sandwich with jalapeño focaccia, and that was well worth the up-charge. The moist bread featured sharp cheese fused into the bread like chicharron de queso, plus a chile kick. In the middle, they stack fluffy egg, molten white cheddar and crispy bacon slices, which all contribute to breakfast bliss.
