The first Friday of each month, Joe Keeper hosts “Mixology Classes” at Bar Keeper, his Sunset Junction barware emporium. At these cocktail gatherings, the focus is on education. Keeper brings in a “bartender of merit” who chooses vintage cocktails that people don’t make anymore. Keeper and the bartender explain the history of the cocktails before teaching attendees how to make, garnish and serve the drinks.
On Friday, December 5, Bar Keeper will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. He’s invited mixologists Scott Campbell and Rhachel Shaw to prepare to uniquely American cocktails, one made with Gin, the other with Rye.
Campbell bartended in San Francisco at The Skylark in the Mission District and at the Blind Tiger Lounge in Chinatown. He now works in the entertainment industry. Shaw currently bartends at Malo.
Both cocktails come from “What You’ll Have” by Julien J. Proskauer, published in November 1933, the year Prohibition ended.
BRONX COCKTAIL (Gin)
Juice of ¼ Orange
¼ Sweet Vermouth
¼ Dry Vermouth
½ Dry Gin
Shake, Strain & Serve
THE WALL STREETER (Rye)
2 parts Rye Whiskey
1 egg white
2 dashes Cointreau

You have to subscribe to Keeper’s newsletter in advance in order to attend. Otherwise, Bar Keeper will get swarmed and there won’t be enough cocktails to go around. The event lasts from 7:30 PM – 11 PM. The cost: $0.00, since Bar Keeper isn’t permitted to sell alcohol.
