Week in Pictures: Bourbon, Cheesy Cazuelas, Coconut Flan + More

Sandwich Miami

November 28, 2011 - Plenty of people in Miami mentioned Enriqueta's Sandwich Shop, and the Cuban institution in the Wynwood Arts District delivered a minimalist pressed sandwich - Pan Con Lechon - featuring pulled pork, sweet onions and little more.

Every week involves a steady stream of food, drinks and people. Of course not every taste or conversation is post-able, but the range of experiences is usually pretty amazing. Lucky me. Discover highlights from November 28 – December 4, 2011, some of which will help to fuel full posts.

Dessert Miami

November 28, 2011 – My visit to Miami finished with a Caribbean flourish, beginning at Jimmy’z Kitchen, the pan-Latin restaurant from chef Jimmy Carey. His coconut flan was far from definitive, but it was definitely amazing. The base layer was macaroon-like shredded coconut, the top resembled a Chinese egg custard cup, and the drizzle was pure dulce de leche. This is a clear contender for Dessert of the Year.

Restaurant Sign Miami

November 29, 2011Yardbird is a trendy restaurant in South Beach with a relatively complicated plate of fried chicken and waffles, a menu of Southern inspired dishes, plus a row of clever blackboard images that includes a tribute to bourbon.

Grilled Cheese Miami

November 30, 2011The Cheese Course is one of the options in a modern Miami insta neighborhood called Midtown. They use a fraction of their cheeses to produce sandwiches like the Classic Cheddar Melt with aged Cheddar, sun-dried tomato pesto, black olive tapenade and basil.

Coffee Santa Barbara

December 2, 2011 – “I can ride my bike with no handlebars, No handlebars, No handlebars.” So sang the Flobots. When it comes to coffee, Handlebar Coffee Roasters refers to the new Santa Barbara roastery from former pro cyclists Aaron Olson and Kim Anderson. Their coffee’s starting to pop up around SoCal.

Macaroni And Cheese Los Angeles

December 2, 2011AOC Wine Bar still produces high-quality Cal-Med cuisine on increasingly competitive 3rd Street, including a cazuela of maccheroni with sottocenere cheese and lardo.
