The North Shore of Oahu is probably best known for death defying, big wave surfing. Beaches and farms also factor into the indelible images from this sometimes rugged part of Hawaii. Further down the list, but no less important, are culinary touchstones like shrimp trucks. Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck and Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp are the best known options. Shaved ice shops such as Matsumoto Shave Ice also stand out along Kamehameha Hwy. Thanks to Ted Nakamura and Ted’s Bakery, the North Shore has also become famous for haupia pie.

Bare bones Ted’s Bakery features a surf mural on the front wall, with tables outside.
Ted’s Bakery sells Danishes, cookies, Portuguese sausage rolls and plate lunches. They’re best known for haupia pie, but their pie selection also includes banana cream, chocolate peanut butter, chocolate macadamia nut cream, and strawberry guava cream. They even offer Dobash cake, but especially for first time visitors, it’s all about haupia, which is kind of a cross between jello and pudding.

Our tour group split a whole Chocolate Haupia Pie ($11.90) on the outdoor patio.

Soft crust hosted layers of chocolate pudding, firm jello/pudding-like coconut haupia and whipped cream that looked like choppy sea, fitting given the notorious North Shore waves.
