Rivera chef-owner John Rivera Sedlar celebrated the ascension of Pope Francis, the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church. As Sedlar said, “As a Latino, having a Pope is profound.” To honor the Buenos Aires-born man who once went by Jorge Mario Bergoglio, while simultaneously tipping a hat to Mexican-born L.A. Archbishop Jose Horacio Gomez, Sedlar created a four-course prix fixe menu for $45, including optional wine pairings from sommelier Mark Mendoza. Here’s a recap of the food, including Catholic plate imagery.
Entrada consisted of Crab Chorizo with Patagonian Rosé Wine Sauce.
Carne featured flaky Empanadas of Pulled Beef with Habanero Chimichurri.
Pollo, aka Chicken Milanesa with Citrus-Arugula Chimichurri, involved juicy Jidori chicken with purple passion lettuce from Cielo Verde, the rooftop garden that now caps Petty Cash Taqueria.
Postre, Plaza de la Republica Gelato Sundae, stacked scoops of Malbec, pineapple herb and Meyer lemon herb ice cream topped with gold leaf.
