Wine Los Angeles

To celebrate Independence Day, Pourtal owner Stephen Abronson and Wine Director Peter Birmingham scoured the U.S. for wines from as many states as possible. They managed to arm their Enomatics with 30 different wines and only one repeat: Maine. Unusual wines include Berwer Cellars’ Key Lime Ice from Florida, Strawbale Winery’s “Jalapeno” white blend from South Dakota, Bear Creek Winery’s “Rhubarb Wine” from Alaska and Tradewines Winery’s Passion Fruit Wine from Hawaii.

“20 states are not reciprocal in their shipping laws,” says Birmingham. “Even though they make wine, they do not allow it to be shipped across state lines. That would require me or Stephen Abronson hopping on a plane, but then the ABC would not allow us to sell it.”

Birmingham identified three of his favorite selections on a recent phone call, including Norton, from Missouri, “a really remarkable grape that I hope will become better now,” the Key Lime wine from Florida, and “another great one from Indiana, called Seyval Blanc. These are grapes that were developed to make good wine in very humid and challenging conditions. That part of the heartland is very hot and humid during the summer.”

Birmingham will gladly take you on a tasting tour, complete with tasting notes and “traditional American goodies” like hot dogs, sliders and mac & cheese.
