Kean Coffee Shakerato

Coffee Orange County

Coffee may not scream relief during a heat wave, but Kean Coffee is where I landed during a summery streak that sent Southern California temperatures soaring above 100 Fahrenheit. The Italianate Newport Beach cafe from third generation coffee professional Martin Diedrich and wife Karen Diedrich has been a regional leader for almost a decade. No, they’re not traditionalists, as evidenced by the addition of ice-blended drinks with names like Blueberry Buzz and The Red Monkey, but they still do a good job with classics like the Shakerato.

The Shakerato ($2.95), an Italian drink that’s popular during the summer, combines fresh-pulled espresso (in Kean’s case, a triple shot) and cane syrup, shaken with ice and strained. The bright, highly caffeinated drink, which isn’t too sweet, becomes frothy in the glass, and with tiny shards of ice floating up top, proved to be quite refreshing.
