Smog City Brewing Quercus Circus

Craft Beer Los Angeles

Brewmaster Jonathan Porter and his wife Laurie, who directs sales, marketing and distribution efforts, have built plenty of good will since Smog City Brewing Company started brewing at Tustin Brewing Company in 2011. Friends of Smog City and beer-fueled industry types were out in force on May 11 to help support the opening of their Torrance taproom. To say the Porters have the support of the craft beer community would be an understatement.

The Porters had eight beers on tap for their debut, including Sabre-Toothed Squirrel, which probably had the most imposing name of the bunch. Of the beers I tried, the taster that left the biggest impression was Quercus Circus, a 6.8% Belgian blonde ale that spends 19 months in a variety of oak barrels and swims with lacto fermented Saison, resulting in a tart, golden liquid that had me smacking my lips.
