“Nothing you can know that isn’t known. Nothing you can see that isn’t shown. Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be. It’s easy.” These lyrics are from “All You Need is Love,” a seemingly simple single from The Beatles and credited writer John Lennon that came out in 1967 and served as a positive mantra to listeners during the Summer of Love. Nearly 50 years later, Jeff Bagby and his team at Bagby Beer in Oceanside were inspired to brew an American extra pale ale by the same name in Oceanside, under dire circumstances.
Sadly, June’s mass shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub, which killed 49 people, was the inciting incident. Hillcrest Brewing collaborated with Karl Strauss Brewing Company to benefit the shooting’s victims, and inspired 17 other members of the San Diego Brewers Guild to produce interpretations of All You Need is Love. Bagby’s crisp, golden APA clocks 4.8% ABV. I recently enjoyed a pint of their take on All You Need is Love at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood and can confirm Love is still a summer hit with an enduring message of peace.
