Los Angeles Milkshakes Worth Seeking

Summer screams for cold, refreshing beverages, and the King (or Queen) of that category could very well be the milkshake. The blended drink, which often features ice cream, milk, or both, is cooling comfort in a cup. Learn about 12 of my favorite Los Angeles milkshakes, which appear in alphabetical order.

Lucy Danovic’s Mid-City bakery and café serves several different shakes, including Coffee Toffee Crunch Shake, Triple Chocolate Shake, and my favorite, Mint Chocolate Crunch Shake. Staffers blend refreshing mint ice cream, whole milk and chocolate chips. Chocolate sauce cascades down the side of the glass, and a single crunchy mint malt ball tops the pastel green liquid. Yes, whipped cream is included, if you like that type of fluff.

The Oinkster Ube Milkshake ($6)

At a pair of burger-centric spots from chef Andre Guerrero, his team crafts an ube shake made with Fosselman’s taro ice cream, ube (purple yam) paste, and whipped cream. This particular shake is a hat tip to his Filipino heritage, though he also sells vanilla, chocolate or strawberry substitutes. [The Oinkster]

Pono Burger House Made Milk Shake ($6)

Chef owner Makani Gerardi has crafted a unique Quonset hut environment in Santa Monica. The Hawaii native’s shakes feature organic Straus Family Creamery vanilla soft serve ice cream and whole milk, which contributes to a rich, creamy result. In summer, they feature fresh strawberry shakes. Year round, they serve a version with hot fudge and cacao nibs. However, my favorite combination featured vanilla ice cream, salted caramel sauce and smoky Niman Ranch bacon bits.

Short Order Frozen Custard Shakes ($6 – $14) [CLOSED]

Milkshake Los Angeles

At this Original Farmers Market ode to Americana, which is proud of its supply chain, of course they’ve got milkshakes in Mason jars. They’ve got Straus Family Creamery vanilla, TCHO chocolate and coffee malt on a daily basis, plus Adult Shakes courtesy of bartender Julian Cox like the Drunken Girl Scout and Charlie Brown. Refer to the Daily Specials, which could include vanilla custard and candied cashews; or possibly a Breakfast Shake with Short Cake-made granola and dried blueberries.

Have you tried the milkshake at The Fix Burger in Silverlake? I usually order a shake whenever I see it on the menu, and few come close to this one IMO.

Wayne, it’s been quite awhile since I’ve been to The Fix Burger. What’s your favorite shake flavor there?

When it comes to chocolate milkshakes, most places add chocolate syrup to vanilla ice cream. Two places (there are probably more), however, use chocolate ice cream instead, and it makes all the difference.

The 101 Coffee Shop on Franklin does a killer chocolate milkshake (not to mention a great expresso version too), but my favorite is surprisingly Burger Lounge on Sunset. Deeply, richly chocolatey — I’ve yet to find a better chocolate milkshake in LA.

Ben,

It’s been too long since I’ve checked out 101 Coffee Shop. I’ve also heard good things about their meatloaf. Thanks for the input.

I absolutely LOVE Short Order’s milkshakes. Great round up.

Also, do you mean to strikeout Three Twins? Just wondering… definitely going to try their shake soon!

Rochelle,

Thanks for reading my milkshake round-up. Hopefully you get some use out of the list. Also, thanks for letting me know about Three Twins. That was just a formatting error. All fixed.
