The South Bay is famous for surfing, but beer and food are coming on strong in Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches.

Several marathoners knew about Quality Seafood market down the boardwalk that’s known for live seafood.
We took turns scraping cool, creamy uni from the still-squirming sea urchin shell. How do sushi restaurants get away with charging so much when Quality only charges $7 per pound? Oh yeah, full service and higher rent.
Choisauce and Mattatouille were enamored with Pier Bakery’s dense churros, which were served fresh from the fryer with containers of caramel sauce and strawberry jam.
We concluded our marathon at Hudson House, the new Redondo Beach gastropub from chef-owners Brooke Williamson and Nick Roberts, who also own Beechwood in Marina del Rey.
Hudson House has a limited tap list but a pretty good selection of bottles, including Lindemans Pêche, a peach-flavored Belgian Lambic.
No pub is complete without a burger. The Hudson Pretzel Burger ($10) comes on soft pretzel bread with pickled onions, crispy bacon, Jarslberg cheese and wild arugula that’s probably supposed to cut the richness, but couldn’t. Still, it was a solid, juicy burger.
Ground Lamb Sugarcane Skewers ($10) were especially luscious, skewered with sugar cane and served with dishes of olives and spicy honey yogurt harisa sauce.
Hudson House’s pail of sweet potato fries ($4) was another highlight: hot, crispy and subtly sweet.
Dry bacon-studded biscuits arrived showered with chives.
Hudson House’s greasy beer-battered cauliflower fritters and beer-fried Twinkie weren’t as satisfying.
Overall, the South Bay Beer and Food Marathon was a success. Almost every spot was new, most of them delivered, and it was great to hang out with other food and beer lovers.

Sorry about that photo. Collateral damage.
I liked the churros pretty well, but not as much as you and Christine. If people are on the pier, it’s worth stopping at Pier Bakery.
