Q&A with Hawai’I Nui Brewing Company co-owner Keith Kinsey

Keith Kinsey grew up in Orange, California, and majored in Economics and Politics at UC Santa Cruz, before working as a commercial banker. A move to Portland first exposed him to the craft brewing sector, and after he moved to Hawaii to work for Bank of Hawaii, he became CFO for Mattson Davis at Kona Brewing Co. That’s before he teamed with Baker on their own beer venture. On September 27, we spoke to Kinsey in the Hawai’i Nui Brewing Company tasting room. Click Here to Learn More.

And that should be enough to attract the majority of the weekend beer connoisseurs. But… in the off chance that more persuasion is required, let me pose and answer a few questions.

Will bourbon barrels come into play for this tasting? Yes
Will there be any new beers on this tasting? Yes at least three…
Will there be any smoky beers? Probably…
Will there be any stout goodness from Scandinavia or abroad? But of course!”

According to The Beer Chicks, “LA Beer Week is upon us and we Beer Chicks wanted to do something special and different to celebrate it. So this year we’re doing it all wrong! We’re taking the idea of ‘a shot and a beer’ which is usually reserved for not-so-great beer and even-less-great spirits – and turning it on its head. We got together with the spirits experts at Seven Grand and (after a long afternoon) paired delicious craft beer with amazingly complex whisk(e)ys – yes, our version of the Boiler Maker! We’re doing two events to celebrate what we’re calling the 7/8 Boiler Maker Menu.

#1) First, we’re doing a Late Night Penny Preview Tasting of 2 or 3 of the 7/8 Boiler Makers this Friday at the 8th Street Bottle Shop from 11pm – 1am. Stop by the shop counter during that time and have a little taste and talk a bit about it with us Beer Chicks and our pal and whisky expert Johnny the Scot!

#2) We’re doing the 7/8 Boiler Maker Menu Launch Party on Tuesday, October 25th at 7pm at Seven Grand. On that day, you’ll be able to drink the Boiler Makers (made to share with friends) at Seven Grand – then, if you love them, you can hop on over to the 8th Street Bottle Shop and buy the made-in-ABV-heaven combos.”

SmithHouse Tap & Grill – a modern American restaurant featuring celebrity chef Angelo Sosa’s globally influenced cuisine alongside an extensive collection of craft beers—introduces “Twenty Tastes in Twenty Days,” a beer-centric special in honor of Oktoberfest. Beginning October 12, interested guests will receive a punch card where they may track each beer ordered through the end of the month. Those who enjoy 20 or more beers during this time period will become inaugural members of the exclusive SmithHouse Mug Club. Members of the Mug Club are awarded 24-ounce beer steins, which they may personally decorate, that are cleaned and housed at the restaurant for re-use whenever they return. Following initiation into the Mug Club, members’ steins are filled at the price of a normal draft of beer (16 ounces), guaranteeing that members receive an additional eight ounces complimentarily with each beer order.
