Hey Happy Turmeric Cashew Vanilla

Beverage Victoria

In Victoria, the powder blue Johnson Street Bridge connects bustling downtown with bucolic Victoria West. The drawbridge has been a point of pride for Vancouver Island residents since 1924. A more futuristic bridge is replacing this B.C. classic, but joy will still emanate from nearby businesses, including a coffee bar in the bridge’s shadow: Hey Happy.

Rob Kettner’s airy, three-year-old cafe has a lime green backdrop, light wood elements, and dispenses some of the city’s best coffee. They brew espresso, filter coffee and nitro cold brew using beans from independent companies like Elm Coffee Roasters, 49th Parallel Coffee, Drumroaster Coffee, Phil & Sebastian, and Heart Coffee Roasters. Their advanced menu also features a filter coffee tasting flight and a drink that floored my entire family.

Turmeric Cashew Vanilla ($5.75) actually contains no coffee, but makes up for that restriction by swirling house-made cashew milk, vanilla, ginger, turmeric, and honey. Choose a hot or iced preparation. Go cold and get a cool Mason jar. My wife liked this well-balanced drink so much that we actually ordered it twice during our short stay in B.C.’s capital.
