Bite Sized Beer News, Ginger Saison + #LABW11

Craft Beer Los Angeles

Does Ambitious Ales live up to the lofty name?

There is lots of Los Angeles area beer news and sometimes I just can’t decide what to feature. To copy the format used by the Celebrator beer magazine back in the day (and Tomm Carroll in particular), this Brew & You entry brings a bunch of bite-sized items of beer interest to Angelenos.

Starting with the good news that Ogopogo Brewing in San Gabriel will be canning two beers starting with their Hazy IPA, Sharlie, and continuing with their Belgian styled White Ale, Boeman.

On the negative side of the ledger, Iron Triangle Brewing is wrapping up brewing activity. They never seemed to gain traction in the hyper busy DTLA brewing scene. They have a lovely space south of the Arts District that hopefully will be snapped by a next generation brewer.

Another DTLA brewery is adding space as Mumford Brewing hops across Alameda to a new space that is under construction. The current tap room is rumored to become additional brewing space. Mumford is also in process on a spot in Glendale.

Be on the lookout for the word Kveik. It is a new yeast. For simplicity sake, a Norwegian Farmhouse yeast style. Beers made with it are starting to pop up like at Eagle Rock Brewery which recently released a Hazy IPA made with it.

I have been visiting a spate of new breweries in the past couple of months and of them I have been most impressed by Ambitious Ales in the Bixby Knolls section of Long Beach. Great summer patio, well appointed interior, and some excellent beers like Hopped on Phonics (an all Strata Hop session IPA) and Fleur (a Belgian-y beer with chamomile tea).

Lastly, be on the lookout for two new breweries in planning. Feathered Serpent Brewing in the San Dimas area and Maltitude Brewing in the Long Beach area will be jumping hurdles and diving through hoops of the opening process.

The Non-IPA Beer of the Week is a returning spring seasonal with a kick. Eagle Rock Brewery has been loaded their Ginger Saison into 16-ounce cans for 2019. Featuring cold-pressed ginger root juice, this sprightly Saison will put a spring into your step.

The tentpole event of the Los Angeles beer calendar has been announced. The 11th Annual L.A. Beer Week and the big Kickoff Festival will be on Saturday, June 15, this year and will again be held at the Los Angeles Center Studios just off the 110 freeway. 90 independent craft breweries, including the ever-growing list of Los Angeles Brewery Guild members, will be tapping beer. #LABW11 VIP Tickets include a premium keepsake glass, early entry at 12 p.m., and a VIP lounge area. Get your tickets when the sale goes live.
