Food GPS beer editor Sean Inman chooses 10 great California beers by style.

Now that we are firmly in the grip of our mellow California autumn, it is time to turn our attention to the stout style of beer. I am not talking about the imperial or barrel aged. No, I refer to the humble stout that is just that, stout.  And this is just in time for International Stout Day, which is November 8! Here are my 10 Great California Stouts, choices that span the style from our state’s breweries.

6. High Water Brewing – Campfire

Look for the waterfall on the label to find this stout that could fall into the sub-sub-sub category of S’more Stout.  One of the rare beers described as having notes of Graham cracker.

7. ThirstyBear – Kozlov

Russian in name but not in stout style.  This San Francisco brewpub put an emphasis on bittersweet chocolate for their version of stout.  Another to get on Nitro to maximize the mouthfeel.  Plus certified organic!

8. Modern Times Beer – Black House

This was my first beer from the newly opened San Diego brewery and it made me want to try all of their beers.  Which I did.  But I still think this is my favorite.  And it comes in a smartly designed can.

9. Barrelhouse Brewing – Stout

Paso Robles has a growing scene and I was taken by the bucolic nature of the tasting room at Barrelhouse.  Then I tried the tasting tray which included the stout and I knew I would get the opportunity to talk about it.  And this list is just the place.

10. AleSmith – Speedway Stout

I am going to break my rule because I have to add this iconic stout to the list even though it is an Imperial and well over 10% ABV.  But when I think of stout and California, this is what comes to my mind first.

As always, comment below on what your favorite stouts are, and happy #StoutDay!

As Rasputin is not on the list, who will take this seriously

David,

In the intro, Sean made a point of saying he was steering clear of Imperial stouts, though he did make one exception: Speedway. Do you like Old Rasputin better than Speedway?

So, I could have put any 9 beers on the list + Rasputin and the list would have been kosher? That is a great beer though.
