Ashtala Dakota Smoothie

Smoothie Los Angeles

FurnSaj Bakery has been one of my favorite L.A. options for falafel, shawarma, and savory Lebanese flatbreads. Charlie Succar and brother Mel opened a sister project in the same Granada Hills strip mall called Ashtala that features the Lebanese-style fruit cocktails they enjoyed growing up in Bsharri, along with gelato and Açaí bowls inspired by travels.

Dakota ($7.99 for 16 ounces, $8.99 for 20 ounces) is a particular stellar smoothie featuring an almond milk base. As Mel Succar said, “We wanted to get away from dairy. You can get that anywhere.” Banana, granola, dates, and whey protein also factor into the healthy, but hearty blend. For contrast’s sake, I added a dollar dusting of antioxidant rich turmeric.
