Craft Beer Los Angeles

More cask conditioned beer is headed L.A.’s way as Yorkshire Square Brewery is set to launch in the SoCal brewhub of Torrance right across the street from Honda HQ.

Andy Black has moved into the Head Brewer role in Charles Croft’s new start-up after stints at MacLeod’s and El Segundo Brewing. He started with three really well crafted British ales with more on the horizon. All of which you should watch being dispensed because the cascasding quality as the beer clears is a sight to behold.

Early Doors was first on the handpumps, a bitter that was soft and malty with a lovely touch of toast to it. This was my personal favorite of the trio tasted. The Tenant was next up, a British Pale that was on point. Wuthering Stout was last and tasted nice as well. The last two beers could have used a little more malt heft to them to really round them out. A Northern Mild and a dry-hopped beer are in the pipeline along with a brawnier brown ale. Occasional guest beers will be given the cask treatment to allow people to see how an IPA, for example, might taste when dispensed differently.

The space (which has plenty of parking) has a warm cottage feel to it. Dartboard and fireplace and a TV for watching football. Not the Rams or Chargers version. What is even better is the long and narrow patio which is perfect for kicking back and enjoying a few pints (or half pints). Another plus is that food service will be added as well. Yorkshire Square soft opens April 19.

The BEER OF THE WEEK is organic and has an experimental hop from the Oregon Hophouse, aka The Leavy Far,m which has been growing hops since the 1920s! Eel River Brewing‘s Earth Thirst Double IPA is in 22-ounce bombers now. To me the X17 hop added quite a load of dankness. This beer gives a direct hit of hops right off the bat and doesn’t stop. Hopheads and fans of Earth Day will both love this beer.

Your HOMEWORK is to take your L.A. brewery map and put a new pin in the City of Whittier because renowned chef Ricardo Diaz (Bizarra Capital, Colonia Tacos Guisados, and Colonia Publica) is opening a brewery to add to his restaurant operations. The aptly named Whittier Brewing Co. is looking to open in the back half of the year, so follow along with their growth on their Facebook presence.
