Los Angeles Milkshakes Worth Seeking

GUIDE CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

Summer screams for cold, refreshing beverages, and the King (or Queen) of that category could very well be the milkshake. The blended drink, which often features ice cream, milk, or both, is cooling comfort in a cup. Learn about 12 of my favorite Los Angeles milkshakes, which appear in alphabetical order.

Sweet Rose Creamery Milkshake ($7.50)

Milkshake Los Angeles

This small batch ice cream shop from pastry chef Shiho Yoshikawa, Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan Loeb has branches at the Brentwood Country Mart, near Santa Monica High High School, and in Mid-City. Blackboard menus change to reflect the seasons. Their milkshake is available with a choice of flavors. If the season is right, I’d suggest a basil shake with three scoops of herb flecked basil ice cream, Clover milk, and optional whipped cream cap.

Three Twins Ice Cream Milkshake ($7) [CLOSED]

Milkshake Los Angeles

This Bay Area import debuted in 2005 in San Rafael and opened near the beach in Santa Monica in time for summer. Neal Gottlieb, one of the twins in question, partnered with Matt Grebil and a man named Sia on this clean space, which features reclaimed wood walls with green menus touting organic ice cream, sandwiches with gluten-free vegan cookies, coffee floats starring Stumptown cold brew, and the Twinassaurus, 20 scoops of “absurdity,” all showcasing dairy from Petaluma. Their milkshake includes 3-4 scoops of ice cream, organic milk, and flavors like Sea Salted Caramel, Caramel Truffle Swirl with chunks of chocolate truffle, and my suggestion, Dad’s Cardamom. Three Twins substitutes rice milk for their Vegan Milkshake.

Tierra Mia Coffee Frappe ($4.75-$4.95)

Milkshake Los Angeles

The hard charging specialty coffee chain from community-minded owner Ulysses Romero has developed several Latin-influenced specialty beverages since opening in 2008, some of them ice blended. Don’t call them frappuccinos. However, Frappe is how many Bostonians refer to milkshakes. Tierra Mia’s ice-blended drinks are available in flavors like Mocha, Chocolate Mexicano, Caramelo, and perhaps best of all, Rice & Beans. Baristas blend a horchata frappe base with coffee beans, chocolate syrup and whole milk. Expect a dusting of cinnamon and, if you like, whipped cream.

Top Round Milkshake ($4.95)

Milkshake Los Angeles

Top Round, the retro chic Mid-City restaurant from chef Steven Fretz, Anthony Carron, Noah Ellis, and Jamie Tiampo, specializes in roast beef, but don’t sleep on their shakes. According to Chef Fretz, “Our custard is 12% butterfat, we add more real vanilla extract on top of what comes with the base. All of our milkshakes are make with whole milk. There is one secret ingredient in all of our milkshakes, but well, that’s a secret.” Sure, they’ve got vanilla, chocolate and strawberry shakes, but the most compelling option is their Pistachio Milkshake. crafted with French pistachio paste, which is thinned down with simple syrup.

WORTH NOTING

BLD Milkshake Madness: Neal Fraser and Amy Knoll Fraser run this versatile Mid-City restaurant, which recently expanded to LAX. On the last Sunday of each month, beginning at 5 pm, longtime pastry chef Mariah Swan is stationed behind the Beverly Boulevard bar, where she makes shakes spiked (or not), which could include Bourbon Pecan, Cookies & Cream and Strawberry Cheesecake.

Have you tried the milkshake at The Fix Burger in Silverlake? I usually order a shake whenever I see it on the menu, and few come close to this one IMO.

Wayne, it’s been quite awhile since I’ve been to The Fix Burger. What’s your favorite shake flavor there?

When it comes to chocolate milkshakes, most places add chocolate syrup to vanilla ice cream. Two places (there are probably more), however, use chocolate ice cream instead, and it makes all the difference.

The 101 Coffee Shop on Franklin does a killer chocolate milkshake (not to mention a great expresso version too), but my favorite is surprisingly Burger Lounge on Sunset. Deeply, richly chocolatey — I’ve yet to find a better chocolate milkshake in LA.

Ben,

It’s been too long since I’ve checked out 101 Coffee Shop. I’ve also heard good things about their meatloaf. Thanks for the input.

I absolutely LOVE Short Order’s milkshakes. Great round up.

Also, do you mean to strikeout Three Twins? Just wondering… definitely going to try their shake soon!

Rochelle,

Thanks for reading my milkshake round-up. Hopefully you get some use out of the list. Also, thanks for letting me know about Three Twins. That was just a formatting error. All fixed.
