Craft Beer California

Lagunitas Brewing Company has earned national acclaim and recently expanded to Azusa.

The room on the corner of Todd Avenue & A Street is quite purple. The temporary/pop-up taproom for the Lagunitas Brewing Company complex in Azusa has now been up and running for three weekends and looks like the color of the 12th of Never cans that Lagunitas sells.

Inside, picnic tables cluster in the middle of the tall space with thrift store couches at the windows for more leisurely drinking. The metal bar stands in front of a refrigerated trailer containing the beers on tap and in the corner is a “stage” area where live music is played for a few hours each day.

There are no signs of whether or not tours are offered during this construction phase. The sandwich boards primarily state the fact that all beers are $6. A good range of beers is on tap. Waldo’s was on one weekend followed by a barrel aged Westified. Plenty of IPA’s are on too, though the Sucks IPA seems to have gotten heavier in ABV and danker in flavor. All of the beers, whether Pils or Undercover Shut Down comes in Lagunitas branded plastic cups.

It is a relaxed atmosphere inside and to make getting there relaxed too, I highly suggest taking the Gold Line to Azusa and bypass the traffic on the 210 freeway. Walk 20 minutes from the station to the taproom or you could Lyft your way over lickety-split. Food trucks will be on site until the kitchen is completed.

Hours are limited to Wednesday through Sunday from 3pm to 9pm.

It will be interesting to see what the full taproom looks like (as well as the restaurant and possible rooftop bar) when it is completed in August or September of this year.

The BEER of the WEEK is, for once, not hoppy. Magnolia Brewing Co. has started sending down some cans of their Kalifornia Kolsch from San Francisco. Clocking in at a very sessionable 4.7% ABV, this German-styled beer uses malt from Germany, hops from Germany and Kolsch yeast from the home of the style, Cologne.

Your HOMEWORK is South American this week – Brazil specifically – as Southland Beer in Koreatown hosts an April 27 Way Beer take-over. L.A. does not see many bottles, cans or taps of South American craft beer, so take advantage of this opportunity to try something new and different.

Looking forward to trying this place. Love the $6 brews. 20 minutes from the station to the Tap Room is ideal. Having food trucks there too will be great.
