Fleishik’s Zayde Sandwich

Sandwich Los Angeles

Don’t call Fleishik’s a deli. “It’s not a deli,” chef and co-owner Eric Greenspan says. “To me, deli means rye bread, meat, and mustard.” The Jewish sandwich shop from Greenspan, Jim Hustead, James Moon, Avi Heyman, and Daniel Uretsky takes their Kosher designation seriously, even hiring a staff Rabbi called a mashgiach to oversee food storage and prep.

Fleishik translates from Hebrew as “flesh,” so of course most fillings are meaty. I enjoyed the Hot Mess (pastrami) and Babasooey (rotisserie lamb), but was particularly taken with Zayde ($13) named for a Jewish “grandfather.” I never met my paternal grandfather, and barely knew my maternal grandfather, but I’m sure they both would have enjoyed this combo of thick-cut grilled salami, sweet house-made pickles, caramelized onions, and deli mustard on toasted bread.

Greenspan says, “If I had it my way, everything would be on challah.” That said, he heard a public outcry when Fleishik’s didn’t initially offer rye, so he had to source Kosher rye, which was worth the effort.

The Zayde is calling our names. That thick-cut salami is truly a thing of beauty, and you know we’re loving those pickles. This definitely looks like a spot worth taking a tip for.

Fleishik’s serves other good sandwiches, but the Zayde is tough to beat.
