Bake Sale Los Angeles

Food bloggers show they're capable of collaborative charity, and not just personal consumption.

Food bloggers are by-and-large known for their gluttony, but on December 5, several local bloggers are banding together to benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, a nonprofit that’s fought hunger in L.A. since 1973. The Eat My Blog charity bake sale will take place on the patio at the West Hollywood branch of Zeke’s Smokehouse from 10 AM – 4 PM, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the food bank. The EMB committee consists of Cathy Danh (gas•tron•o•my), Diana Hossfeld (Diana Takes a Bite), Laurie Moore (G-ma’s Bakery) and Anjali Prasertong (Delicious Coma). In all, the baking bloggers will produce over 600 different baked goods, including whoopie pies, pumpkin swirl brownies and black sesame cupcakes with matcha frosting.

According to Hossfeld, the committee decided on the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank because “it directly correlates with the passion for food that drives and sustains our writing. We love food, we love to eat and we love to share that experience with other people. On a personal level, both Cathy and I feel absurdly lucky that we get to enjoy extravagant meals on a regular basis while there are so many people going hungry in LA. The poverty is staggering, and we both felt that it was important to highlight this cause and build greater awareness within a blogging community that is blessed with so much.” The group chose Zeke’s Smokehouse due to its central location and high foot traffic.

The EMB committee started by contacting food bloggers whose recipes “have us drooling on a daily basis,” then started asking for suggestions. Eat My Blog already has more than 20 bloggers ready to bake, with more in the works. At last check, participating blogs include Eating L.A., B-Side Blog, Ravenous Couple, Dishing Up Delights, Lisa Timmons, Place and Taste, Savour Fare, Duo Dishes, Eat Sip Chow, Eho Blogs About… and What’s Gaby Cooking?

If the event goes well, the organizers plan to take the fundraiser biannual.
