Burgers and Beer, Van Ice + The Dankness Dojo

Craft Beer Los Angeles

District Pub has become a craft beer destination in NoHo Arts District. [My Camera Eats First]

There are plenty of fancy beer-pairing dinners, but there is nothing like the classic burger and beer combo. It’s better, in my mind, than a burger and side of fries. Two Southland spots offer up the combo in ways you may want to check out.

District Pub is across the street from the Laemmle NoHo. Walk over the tile that betrays its past life as the Treasure Trove and head to the counter to pick up the menu and peruse the taps. Select from 10 burger options (plus any specials). The Big Boy is comprised of Creekstone Angus beef, andouille sausage, Cheddar cheese. An Aioli Burger includes cheddar cheese, arugula, tomato, red onion, and garlic aioli. Or you can get the basic burger and dress it up with two items of your choosing.

District Pub’s beer list doesn’t have Whalez on it, but the choices are solid and included many beers (on my visit) that I hadn’t had on draft in a long time, choices like Allagash White, Racer 5 and Firestone Walker Union Jack. You can also order a flight and find out which beer works the best with your chosen burger.

Lincoln Kitchen & Tap is a new entrant near the 5 freeway in Lincoln Heights. Their website landing page proclaims craft burgers and beers. This spot has 40 rotating taps that you can check on via their Instagram account. A recent check of the menu board showed options like Mumford Brewing’s Laces Out IPA, Ohana Brewing Company’s Pomelo IPA and Dry River Brewing’s Bruxella so you get both an L.A. beer vibe as well as more cutting-edge styles.

Burgers at Lincoln follow a Presidential theme with Truman, Reagan, Clinton and Obama represented. Toppings abound like fried egg, horseradish, blue cheese and many, many others. Plus there is a patio where you can soak up the sun that we get almost every day.

Time to find out which friends live in NoHo and Lincoln Heights so you have an excuse to invite them out for beer.

The BEER OF THE WEEK is the cleverly named new American Light lager from MacLeod Ale Brewing Co. Van Ice is a limited (local) offering that may make its way to 16-ounce cans in time for summer, but you just might be able to catch it in the depths of our SoCal “winter”. This beautiful straw colored beer is a refreshing pre-cursor to warmer days.

Your HOMEWORK is to head to the Dojo. Modern Times Beer opened up their L.A. outpost a week+ ago in the South Park section of Downtown L.A. Expect to taste lots of hoppy beers, smell the coffee from their “little side biz” roasting beans, and marvel at the decorative touches that only Modern Times would put on a wall.
