Coffee Los Angeles

Between CalTech, the Norton Simon Museum, and ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena City College, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena clearly appreciates art and science. Where do all of these creative people get the energy to practice their craft? Pasadena has housed established caffeine peddlers like Intelligentsia Coffee, Jameson Brown Coffee Roasters, and Jones Coffee Roasters for years. Art + Science Café, which Seung Lee opened in fall 2016, has the most apropos name of any coffee bar.

Art + Science Cafe resides on a side street near the Laemmle Playhouse 7 movie theatre and competing Urth Caffe. Brick walls and a small patio give way to a white brick interior that houses a gold shark, marble counter, and studious teens. The coffee program features a La Marzocco espresso machine and Four Barrel coffee. Baristas pride themselves on latte artistry including a matcha latte with textured milk forming a bear pattern, and a military latte that latte art champion Hiroshi Sawada made famous in Tokyo and Chicago.

At Art + Science Cafe, the Military Latte ($5.95) is made with a double shot of espresso, matcha powder, dots of cocoa powder. According to the menu, “The unique camouflage color delights your experience.” This drink was high-octane, minimally sweet, and even though it was clearly derivative, the military latte was still a satisfying blend of art and science.
