Sausage Orange County

Garden Grove in Orange County contains a nice stretch of Little Saigon and a distinct Korean District and is strong on Vietnamese and Korean cuisines, but the city also boasts other Southeast Asian standouts. Spicy Lao features the rarely seen cuisine of Laos in back of a strip mall. The high-energy space features decorative fans and bicycles on the walls, a fish tank, elephant statuettes, Pandora’s Stevie B station on repeat, and a focused 10-item menu.

I tried three dishes, none better than Lao Sausage ($9.95) AKA sai kok. Spicy Lao’s house-made pork sausage comes “bursting with flavors” like lemongrass, Makrut lime leaves, and chile peppers. Links are grilled to order until the snappy skin becomes crispy. The sausage is sliced and served on cabbage with a side of mildly spicy tomato paste, which I’d be happy to enjoy again and again, just like “Because I Love You (The Postman Song).”

Dose of Vitamin P spotlights my favorite pork dish from the previous week.
