Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp [CLOSED]

Shrimp Hawaii

Oahu’s North Shore, centered on Kahuku, is studded with shrimp-focused trucks and restaurants, and Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp is my favorite of the bunch, featuring shrimp raised in adjacent ponds. The sea blue shack with red picnic tables covered with green tarps spun off from the family’s original truck, which parks just up the road and dates to 2005. The open-air restaurant touts the same owner and recipes and an even better setting.

Since my family rolled deep, six people total, we were able to try six different shell-on shrimp preparations, all inherently sweet and super fresh. Every Styrofoam container ($13) contained two scoops of steamed white rice and a distinct sauce. For instance, sweet Coconut Shrimp came with sweet chile dipping sauce. Salt & Pepper Shrimp came with plain rice. Otherwise, rice absorbed each sauce to great effect, whether it was ferocious Hot & Spicy Shrimp, tangy Lemon Pepper Shrimp. classic Butter Garlic Shrimp or punchy Spicy Garlic Shrimp. Each container comes with a salad and tart lilikoi dressing, and a slice of sweet pineapple, which could have easily been dessert, if nearby Ted’s Bakery pie didn’t beckon us.
