Langer’s Deli #44 Sandwich

Sandwich Los Angeles

It probably seems counter-intuitive to order anything other than the #19 at Langer’s Deli, but if you’re lucky enough to live in Los Angeles, why not risk another choice? After all, the Langer family clearly has proven staying power, the luxurious combo of pastrami, Swiss, cole slaw and Russian dressing will be available next time, and if you’re a believer in America’s ultimate pastrami sandwich, isn’t it conceivable that the Langers put thought into the rest of their menu? In the past I’ve ordered the #65, a pastrami sandwich with sliced tomato and cream cheese, and while that combo’s a little whacky, at least it included imperative pastrami and “re-baked” rye bread. Which brings me to the #44, a massive sandwich cradling juicy spice-rimmed pastrami, tangy sauerkraut, and nippy cheese, basically bright yellow American cheese with slight bite that melts into the bread during grilling. Yes, they provided a crunchy, judiciously tart dill pickle spear on the side, to complete the culinary tour de force.
