“Say Yes.” One of my favorite Elliot Smith songs shares a name with Yes Plaza in Rowland Heights, and in both cases, it pays to accentuate the positive. The strip mall in the eastern San Gabriel Valley houses full-force Indonesian restaurant Java Spice, a branch of boba-centric Tastea and several other Asian restaurants, including No. 1 Noodle House.

The eight-year-old Sichuan restaurant hides behind a colorful facade in the Yes Plaza’s back corner, which kind of resembles a low-rent Hollywood backlot. Forge ahead to find some incendiary dishes, some of which showcase beef lung and pork blood, and others that are relatively tame but still fierce, including Dandan Noodles.

For $5.30, or a buck more if you’re feeling especially hungry, expect a bowl of firm flour noodles topped with crusty nubs of ground pork, pungent pickled vegetables, scallions, and a slick of nutty peanut sauce. A one-two chile punch comes in the form of chile flakes up top and chile oil hidden beneath the noodles. Mix all of the ingredients together to coat the noodles with a savory, spicy slurry that will sting your lips, but in a good way.
