The two main ingredients in coffee milk, Rhode Island’s official drink since 1993, are not coffee and milk. Yes, milk is the base, but coffee comes in the form of syrup. Autocrat and Eclipse are the two most popular brands of coffee syrup in The Ocean State.
To start 2016, Chef Michael Cimarusti and front of house partner Donato Poto rolled out weekend brunch at their chic West Hollywood seafood restaurant, Connie & Ted’s. The restaurant honors his mom’s parents, who lived in Rhode Island. During brunch, you’ll find Rhode Island Coffee Milk ($5) on a menu of Brunch Beverages that reads, “If it is before noon, we won’t tell.” In this case, whole milk and coffee syrup arrive frothy in the glass, along with a dusting of nutmeg. Another flourish worth noting is the ability to add Selvarey cacao infused rum for $4, which makes brunch even more enjoyable on at least two levels.
