Restaurant Los Angeles

Famed Dracula interpreter Bela Lugosi watches diners from a poster on Transylvania's wall.

Zoltan Imre is a Hungarian math teacher and accountant who followed his passion for cooking to Hollywood. He honed his skills at the Hollywood and Encino farmers markets. Last year, he opened Zoltan’s Transylvania Bakery in Little Armenia, on the ground floor of the Hollywood Downtowner hotel. Thanks to support from his landlord, he just completed expansion efforts. After a year-long transformation, Imre finally opened Transylvania restaurant on April 4.

For now, he’s providing an American-style by breakfast buffet for $8.99, but next week, Imre hopes to add dinner and introduce Transylvanian dishes and pastries, all you can eat for $14.99 per person. Expect savory dishes like stuffed cabbage, chicken paprikash and Rizi-Bizi – rice with green peas and carrots. Imre also specializes in BBQ meats, all seasoned with “Transylvanian flavors” like tarragon, including pork chops, lamb, top sirloin and Hungarian sausage.

At dinner, Imre also plans to bake traditional Transylvanian tortes and poppy seed rolls. At the bakery, he produced doughnut-like rotisserie sweetbreads called kürtös, but those will be too time-consuming to replicate at the restaurant.

Zoltan has played up the Dracula angle in his decor, incorporating Dracula’s castle and mounting photos on the orange walls of movie actors playing Drac, including Bela Lugosi.

I’ve been eating at zoltans place frequently since he opened and he has a new chef assistant named Victor. The place is opening nicely and a lot of new items are coming out of the kitchen.

Zoltan wants to please the folks in the neighborhood around his place so he is not afraid to try new things for folks to enjoy.

If you have good ideas to share with him I’m sure he would like to hear about them. Victor is a recent graduate from the famous culinary school and he is enjoying his new position. Eric and April are a friendly couple who participate in the management of the restaurant as well.

Try it, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Hits of the day include the famous draculas burger with fries at $4.99 with hungarian style fries.

Breakfast is currently all you can eat at 7.99 a person unless you are lucky enough to eat for free as a visitor to the downtowner hotel next door where breakfast is complimentary.

Breakfast includes eggs, breakfast meats such as bacon or sausage, hungarian syle hash browns, pancakes, coffee, juice, cereal with real milk, yogurt, fruit of the day,
and they now have 2 wonderful waffle machines which produce at your personal command in 2 minutes time. All delicious and what a bargain probably the best in the whole area.
